The early 19th century was a lively time for the literary arts. Poetry was fashionable, novels were being read voraciously, and many new styles of verse and prose were being experimented with. The Gothic novel established itself at this time, as did the historical novel. And of course, Jane Austen created a patterncard with her delightful novels for the Regency authors of today.
