Every English miss was expected to be proficient at a musical instrument - the pianoforte and the harp being the favored instruments. I believe that music was considered to be a gentlemanly art as well. (The tune that "The Star-Spangled Banner" is sung to originated as the theme song for a late 18th c. gentlemen's singing and drinking club called "The Anacreonick Society." (And if you think the Anthem is hard to sing, try wrapping your tongue around the original words, especially if you've been indulging...)) The style for singers was what we would consider operatic. (The men, of course, were singing drinking songs and other more scandalous pieces, in four-part harmony.) On the professional level, the style of music was moving from the Classical theme to the Romantic.

Constable, John: Web Museum
- 1776-1837 The son of a Sussex miller, he had the misfortune to fall in love with landscape painting at a time when the fashion was for heroic historical scenes and portraits. He attended the Academy School in 1799, but wasn't accepted as a full member of the Academy until 1829, and then only after experiencing triumphs in France. Most of his paintings are of his native Sussex, his first masterpiece being "Dedham Vale" painted in 1811. His goal was "to give to one brief moment, caught from fleeting time, a lasting and sober existence." Thumbnail links to 5 paintings.

Lawrence, Sir Thomas: Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
- 1769-1830 Another painter from humble background (the son of an innkeeper,) Sir Thomas made his fame and fortune painting Society with tact and generosity. At 20 he was commissioned to paint the Queen at Windsor and managed diplomatically to paint a charming portrait of a lady not known for her looks or charm. Not surprisingly, he was a member of the Academy by the age of 25. This link takes you to search results at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (including several portraits.)

Turner, Joseph Mallord William: Web Museum
- 1775-1851 Joseph Turner had the good fortune to favor fashionable heroic subjects at the beginning of his career, which lead him to full membership in the Royal Academy by the age of 27. He started life in Maiden Lane, behind Covent Garden, the son of a barber. By the age of 12 he was producing pictures that his father displayed and sold from his barber shop. A clerical customer suggested the Academy School, and Turner first attended at 14, exhibiting a watercolor the following year. In 1800 he opened a studio at 64 Hurly Street, which his father ran for him. His later works focused increasingly on wild skies and stormy seas, and confused critics who thought that he laid the color on too thickly and confusedly, and that he combined the colors in ways that violated established precedents. Thumbnails to 2 paintings.
